Disasters occur every day, some big, some small, but always unwanted, mostly unexpected and never at a convenient time. Disasters are part of everyday life and can be initiated by nature, by superior forces, by human failure or intervention. Disasters are a real threat to cultural heritage collections.
Most minor and some major disasters can be avoided by implementing a well-thought emergency preparedness scheme that minimizes the risk for such occurrences. Should a disaster still strike then it is of the utmost importance to react immediately and to manage this disaster adequately avoiding as much damage to collections and building as possible.
To that end it is imperative that every cultural heritage organization develops and implements a personal disaster planning and emergency preparedness management scheme. To achieve the best results a thorough knowledge of one’s collections and premises is of utmost importance.
